Groundhog Day VR game is coming this year

Today is Groundhog Day, which makes it the perfect time for Sony to announce a VR game set in the (I cannot believe I am typing this) cinematic universe of Groundhog Day, the goofy-yet-heartwarming 1993 hit starring Bill Murray as a beleaguered Pittsburgh weatherman stuck in a time loop.

Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, is “an immersive VR game” that continues where the film left off, 26 years later. Players will take the role of Phil Connors, Jr. who is, like his Dad, “charming but arrogant” and also stuck in Punxsutawney, Pa. (so, Phil and Rita did make good on their desire to settle down there). Also like Phil Sr., Phil Jr. must repeat the day over and over until he, too, “learns the true value of friends and family.”

Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is being developed by Tequila Works, the makers of Deadlight and Rime. It will release later this year for PlayStation VR as well as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The game being published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, which is the VR division of Sony Pictures Entertainment and produced by MWM Immersive. SPVR has done adaptations of other Sony Pictures franchises, including Spider-Man: Homecoming VR and 2016’s Ghostbusters: Dimension.

If you’re wondering about the real Groundhog Day festivities (and yes, Gobbler’s Knob is a real place), Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow when he emerged from his burrow to be terrorized by several top-hatted town fathers. That means we’re getting an early spring, although killjoys CNN say he’s usually wrong about that.
